The Cave!
My shed/snake cave was built by a contractor I know. The dimensions of the "cave" are 7' x 13', which is professionally insulated with high-grade foam insulation and climate controlled with a mini-split unit. although, I must admit that during the winter, I don't even plug it in, because my insulation is so good. While it's 35-45 degrees outside, it's a steady 72-76 in my shed. Really, the A/C unit is only used during the warmest parts of the summer to keep the shed in the mid to upper 70's. I had the shed built and insulated by a contractor I hired. i painted and and pre-wired is myself so I could have electricity. I made is such, that all of my outlets are at "chest-level" and mid-way up the walls. i also swapped out one of my breakers for higher amps so running the shed would trip when the mini-split kicked on, as well as a safety precaution for all of the heat sources in the cages. it's not a huge space, but it fits my needs perfect. A larger collection at this stage in my career would be overwhelming so it works out well for my needs. In 4 years, we will be relocating to South Florida and at that time, i plan on expanding my collection to more animals and will then need a larger space. This is something the wife is already on board with and understands. Hey....we each have out "non-negotiables" when buying a new house. Mine just happen to involve a reptile room, which will most likely be completely detached so it isn't contiguous with the main dwelling. At that time, I hope to be working with reptiles in a more supplemental-income type of capacity.
